Sunday Shift – Being Right or Getting What You Want

by | Feb 9, 2025 | Decision Making

Being Right versus Getting What You Want

How many of you know the difference between the two perspectives? Have you felt yourself so
entrenched in a position or point that you were blinded to the possibility of seeing anything other than your way? Family problems concept. Annoyed father sitting back to back with son on sofa, ignoring each other after argue. Stubborn dad and boy don’t looking or speaking after conflict

For years – and I mean decades – I had no idea that there was a difference or for that ma_er, that there
was even a mindset where I had a choice between the two. Un[l recently. When I discovered this
revela[on, my en[re life changed.

Imagine being with a buyer and you are sharing a road map they should take to search
and eventually decide on purchasing an apartment. Or with a seller and something similar
with regards to the marketing, pricing, and negotiation path for selling their apartment.
In both situations, we come into the relationship as the expert – it’s why we were hired. And in both
situations, we have the confidence and experience to tell those buyers and seller, ‘trust me…I’ve done
this before. I know what I am doing.’

Now in rare situations, our clients will listen, trust, and follow your plan blindly. However, we know
that is rare. What happens if they make suggestions? What happens if they feel even stronger
about their own ‘expert opinions’. Do you dig in and stand on your ground? Do you cave in and give
them control and let the cards fall where they may?

Think of that conversation. How did you feel? I know I felt angry and frustrated – thinking I am the
expert, what do you know. Or I felt anxious or misunderstood, thinking that my plan, when executed
to the last detail, would result in a successful sale.

But here is where understanding the difference between Being Right and Getting What You
Want becomes your most powerful weapon. Knowing what you want in a situation allows you to
release your need to be right.

Being right has nothing to do with getting what you want. I wanted to close a deal; I really did not want to force a particular action or plan with no flexibility. I wanted to have a satisfied client; I really did not want to prove my experience and skill.
Can you see the difference?

I was able to let go of my need to be right and instead focus my energies on getting what I want. The way to master this shit is to live in a world of facts. If you can make fact-based decisions and help present facts to support the most informed decision possible, you can gain confidence in knowing that the path to getting what you ultimately want can take many routes, but the path to being right is almost always ONE.

Which experience would you want to have? Which approach gives you the greatest chance of success? Have you experienced differences in being right versus getting what you want? How did being the right end for you? How did getting what you want end for you?

Share your stories with me and remember giving yourself the most options to get what you want will always involve conceding your position of being right. But in the end, getting what we want should be our goal and our sure path to growth and expansion to levels we can only imagine.
